As I was doing some of my recent "blogging for a cause" (with Pain Awareness Month, and Invisible Illness Week, and Banned Books Week) I started to wonder about what other observances might be coming up. And - no surprise, really - there are a lot.
Some (like the ones above, and some that I'll be talking about as the month goes on) are about serious causes, but some (like today) are really more about having fun, and encouraging an appreciation of life's little treasures. And since I never turn down an excuse to be happy about something, I decided to start honoring some of those fun days.
So, on October 4th we celebrate National Taco Day. It's a day that encourages us to enjoy this traditional Mexican dish (which is now popular world-wide) and to share a good meal with friends and family. Definitely a holiday worth celebrating, if you ask me. :)
And it provided a perfect excuse to take my daughter out to lunch at her favorite Mexican food restaurant. All of the food there is great, but in honor of the occasion we went with one of my favorites, the chicken soft tacos.
My daughter traditionally just sticks to rice and beans (her absolute favorite food) but she agreed to get into the spirit of the day and share a taco with me. As you can see, it was a hit.
Now I want to hear from you! What type of taco is your favorite? Do you prefer to make them yourself, or let someone else do the cooking? Are you doing anything special to celebrate National Taco Day?
My dad makes killer (and I mean so greasy good they might actually kill you) beef and cheese tacos! He spends all day frying up the shells fresh and then packs them with meat, covers those bad boys in cheese, then bakes them until they are crunchy piles of greasy goodness. They're heavenly...or so I hear...
ReplyDeleteMmm... that sounds like one of those things that would send you to heaven and gross you out at the same time. :) I can't take as much of it as I could in my younger days, but a little greasy goodness now and then is still hard to pass up.
DeleteI didn't know it was National Taco Day until this afternoon when I was at lunch with family. We were told that everyone was getting a free taco on observance!! yay for tacos!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Tacos are great, but free tacos are even better. :) Glad you got to enjoy a nice lunch with your family.
DeleteI missed an excuse to have a taco?! This makes me unreasonably sad. Today, my husband and son are both off work and I'd been thinking I should suggest a nice lunch out with the whole family. Now I think I should suggest Mexican, and try to make up for my oversight.
ReplyDeleteI had intended to do all of my "awareness day" type posts the day before (because I was always hearing about things after-the-fact too, and wishing I had known sooner.) Unfortunately it didn't work out to do that this time, but I'll try harder in the future. But the good news is, any day is a good day for tacos. :)
DeleteWith regards to your question, it doesn’t matter if I’m the one who cooked the it or not, what’s important is that the ingredients used for tacos, or any other Mexican food that matter, are fresh and authentic. Anyway, it's great that your daughter likes it; there are many nutrients you can find in all those healthy ingredients. Cheers!

Thanks for stopping by, Diane. You're right - fresh, authentic Mexican food is always the best. And around here, we eat it every chance we get. :)
